Throughout Hawaii's history, its people used all sorts of natural materials for adornment. A lei was made of flowers, shells, feathers and/or seeds. Today this tradition continues to thrive, and part of living here is dressing "island style". This means aloha attire, which is always beautifully complimented by a lei.

Seed and shell leis are worn by men, women, and children. They are used as necklaces, head and hatbands, bracelets, and anklets for hula dancers, and are a beloved craft practiced by young and old.  As a gift from nature, seeds and shells can be gathered easily and withoug harming the environment. Using and wearing them also increases awareness of our natural world and its resources.  Seeds are "nature's beads" and they connect us a cultural craft that keeps our islands' aloha spirit alive.

All of the shells and seeds used in creating the art and jewelry on this website were collected by hand and handmade by the artist, Nancy Rose.
