Nancy Rose (aka Nancy R. Carolan) is a mother of four boys, and has been a cabaret singer, dancer, actress, high fashion model, CD producer and now visual artist. I always loved to collect shells and was inspired by artist Laka Morton's shell art and jewelry to use my love of the shells to create my own visual art. I collect on all parts of the island of Kauai and on rare occasions on the island of Oahu. The Hawaiian shells are unique in that the smallest species of tropical shells are the largest species of tropical shells in Hawaii. The reason is that our surf is so rough that the shells don't get a chance to get very large. I've also found quantities of beach glass at our harbors. I began working with the rare seeds and seed pods a year ago and this close connection to the earth has made me very aware of the nature of Kauai and the beautiful treasures and rich history of the plants and trees of the Hawaiian tropical forests. Many of the seeds I use are almost extinct now. Every time I collect I find something new and I feel like a treasure hunter. I thank the people of Kauai for their support and Aloha. I have received so much from this magical place.
